Ananda's Story
- Born Sarasvati Ananda Lewis on March 21, 1973, in Los Angeles, California, to Yvonne Lewis (a Pacific Bell account manager) and Stanley Lewis (a computer animation specialist)
- After her parents divorced when she was two, Ananda and her sister Lakshmi moved with their mother to San Diego. She spent much of her childhood with her grandmother, an experience that shaped her resilience.
- As a child, she overcame a speech impediment, flourished in creative arts, and at age 8 won Little Miss San Diego with a self-choreographed performance to “Ebony and Ivory”
- She attended the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts for nine years before enrolling at Howard University, where she majored in history and graduated cum laude in 1995.
- While at Howard, she appeared in the music video “Baby, I’m Yours” by Shai
- Encouraged by youth she mentored, she auditioned for BET’s Teen Summit in 1993, hosting for three seasons and tackling issues like race, identity, and self-esteem. She interviewed prominent figures including First Lady Hillary Clinton.
- Her impactful work earned her a 1997 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Youth Series
- in 1997, she joined MTV as a host on flagship shows like Total Request Live and Hot Zone, where she infused entertainment with authenticity and critical social commentary.
- She led programming addressing serious topics—such as the aftermath of Columbine and racial profiling in True Life: I Am Driving While Black—earning further acclaim, including another NAACP Image Award.
